At the Geomic Code Research Institute, we study choice, especially the unconscious choices humans make. This series of articles has been looking at the 6 areas of decision-making influence that drive our choices: Intent, Situation, Values, Destiny, Purpose, and Motivation. In the article we posted on the Geomic Code website in May 2020, I discussed “purpose“. In July, my focus was “intention”, in August, it was “situation” and in September, “values”.

In this article, we will examine destiny.

The dictionary tells us that the word “destiny” has the same Latin root as “destination”. In Latin, “destinare” meant “to determine, appoint, choose, make firm or fast”. Over time, in the English language, the word “destiny” has been more and more associated with an understanding of fate as “an inexorable force that shapes and controls lives and events”.

This understanding of destiny takes the control of any outcome out of the hands of the individual. The synonyms the dictionary lists for “destiny” include “providence”, “the stars”, “chance”, “luck”, “serendipity”, “fortune”, “kismet”, and “karma”.

In Greek mythology, human destiny was portrayed as being controlled by the three Fates, or Moirai. These three weaving goddesses assigned destinies to mortals at birth. It was believed that the three Fates, Clotho (the Spinner), Lachesis (the Alotter), and Atropos (the Inflexible), would appear within three days of a person’s birth to decide his or her fate.

Together, the three Moirai represented the cycle of life, essentially standing for Birth, Life, and Death. Clotho would spin the thread of life, Lachesis would draw it out, and Atropos would cut it. In graphical representations, they are depicted as a maiden, a mother, and a crone.

This brings us to the Geomic Code Research Institute’s understanding of our individual preferences and how they influence unconscious choice. After all, many of us ask of life, “What does Fate have in store for me?” In Geomic Code terms we might ask: “Is our destiny preordained and always manifested in our unconscious choices?”

While studying human choice, the Institute has uncovered several frameworks within which our lives take shape – our destiny, if you will:

1. Unstructured, unconscious choice – Decisions made in this mode can be characterized as “willy nilly” and “some of this and some of that”. The popular expression “Whatever!” comes to mind. Taking a Geomic Code Assessment can help us uncover some of the influences that drive our unconscious choices.
2. Fate structured by outside influences – All of us have in our lives factors from outside ourselves that affect the decisions we make, often unconsciously: Family, Religion, School, Profession and other such formal organizational contexts that bring with them the power to sway us to move in directions we may not have chosen ourselves by following our natural preferences.
3. Destiny driven by powerful parental direction – We have all come in contact with people (or maybe we are one of those people) who are lawyers because their father (or mother) was a lawyer…or a teacher because teaching is “in the family’s blood”…or a [fill in the blank here with a professional path]. This can lead to a major change in vocational direction when a person discovers, usually in mid-life (hence, the expression “mid-life crisis”), that this work life mantle does not fit anymore.
4. Life path determined by material aspirations – Money and power are strong drivers behind many people’s choices. Without the humanizing influences of humility and compassion, these drivers can lead to a life lived without regard for the other people with whom they share the world.
5. Fate blocked by external constraints – The context into which we are born can limit how we view life. Coming into being in a totalitarian society and / or extreme poverty limits the ability to envision anything beyond that which fulfills the lower levels of human need (such as food, drink, and shelter) as characterized by Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
6. Destiny highly influenced by default negative beliefs – I call this “stinkin’ thinkin’”. Any way of living our lives that has us focusing on what we don’t want instead of what we do want limits our possibilities and seems to result in the unintended consequence of having the unwanted show up with uncanny regularity. Unrealistic fears that keep us from trying new things or meeting new people also fall into this category.
7. Undeterred certainty about one’s fate – A percentage of the world’s population operates with an unflappable belief in and appreciation of their life path. They live beyond doubt in a place of conviction that they are where they are supposed to be, doing the things they should be doing.
8. Consciously fated life, directed by vision – At the Institute, we are discovering ways humans can move from acting out of unconscious choice to choices made in the light of consciousness. Humans can learn to take action from a platform of “I am” and “I decide”. Consciously creating one’s fate generates excitement about the future and supports a life of insight motivated by an attitude of personal Manifest Destiny.

Now, on to how we can understand destiny through the prism of the digital remembering tool I’ve been using to study these six areas of decision-making influence.

1) What is destiny?

Destiny in its simplest conceptualization consists of the fates that await you. Your destiny is everything that is going to happen in your life. Your destiny is going to be played out, no matter what. Or is it? One way of seeing your destiny is to view it from the perspective I call “The as is, is”. Your life, in a very real sense, is filled with highs and lows, many of which coming at you from outside yourself. As you live your life, control may often only reside in whether you react or respond. In other words, your choice at any one time may have power over – not what is happening – but what actions you take as your answer to what is happening.

2) What does destiny do?

Understanding our fate – and the role we can play in manifesting our destiny – is crucial to our really living our lives rather than simply stagnating in the “as is, is”. Am I a lifelong learner? Can I see myself in a new context? What ability do I have to create the life I want to live? Humans can walk the fine line between gentle acceptance of what is and active pursuit of a new vision, long held and as yet undiscovered. Destiny can help us see a surprise destination.

3) How do you use destiny?

You use destiny to help you pave a new path. You use it to “wipe the slate clean” of negative thinking (I call this “discreating”) and write a new story for yourself (or, if you prefer to use the metaphor provided by Greek mythology, “weave a new set of clothes to wear”). 4) When do you use destiny?

Often. Awareness of your fate and how it is influenced by conscious and unconscious choice is what the Geomic Code Research Institute is all about. 5) What results can you expect when you follow your destiny?

Unlike salmon, we are not meant to swim upstream (metaphorically speaking). When you follow your destiny by learning about and exercising your own Dynamic Natural Abilities, you move from the darkness of unconscious choice to the light of conscious decision-making. You find life something to be celebrated rather than Sisyphus’ boulder (to use another Greek myth) being forced uphill, only to fall back to earth over and over.
